Michael Jackson's Childhood Home

On a recent visit to Gary, Indiana - I visited Michael Jackson's childhood home. It was surreal. The house is tiny - I can't imagine how 10 children were raised in that home. The neighborhood is absolute crap. MJ's school, Roosevelt High is right behind his house. There was police tape surrounding the house with thousands of bears, posters, letters, candles and other memorabilia covering half of his lawn. Hundreds of mourners gathered as TV crews recorded the scene. People were selling t-shirts and dvds, cds and posters, etc. in makeshift tents outside their homes - trying to make a buck or two off the death of MJ. Everyone was jamming to MJ songs and trying to bust a lame rendition of the moonwalk. MJ's videos were playing in the background as onlookers mourned.
I know a lot of people are so over the MJ death and think I'm morbid for making this visit but Gary is in our backyard so why not? Y'all know how curious I am about stuff in general.
What made me cringe being there was how many houses (at least 70%) in his neighborhood are boarded up, overgrown with weeds and/or torn a part to pieces. A stop sign couldn't even be seen with the amount of tall weeds surrounding it and if your house catches fire, good luck fire department in finding the hydrants! There are several old brick houses that could be restored into beautiful homes. One out of 7 houses keeps up with the maintenance of their lawns.
Was I fearful of my life? On this particular occasion, no. People were too wrapped up at MJ's house and trying to make a profit off of pirated CD's/DVD's and T-shirts with the lamest screen prints I've ever seen in my life to be bothered by the HONKEY walking down the street.
My only hope for this area is that the death of MJ brings some kind of CLEANING crew by that just wipes out all the old and brings in a lot of new. The "grass" is like hay. There's glass everywhere. Burnt houses on one corner...broken ones on the next. The schools are not schools but remnants of a peaceful life gone by eons ago. There are chain linked fences everywhere trying to protect outsiders from coming in to no avail. Its very sad.
Of course, I did find some humor in...of course..a sign. In an abandoned "field" read a sign that said NO DUMPING. $2500 FINE. AREA MONITORED BY POLICE AND NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH. Seriously? That neighborhood is NOT monitored by the police except if you are around MJ's house. It's not even monitored by the "neighborhood watch" because they are too busy watching houses being demolished by their own kin.
2300 Jackson Family Blvd, Gary, Indiana. RIP MJ.
